CRHS theater department presents: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Description
Coon Rapids High School (CRHS) proudly presents: Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
This widely praised masterwork is a comedy focused on the events surrounding the marriage between the Duke of Athens, Theseus, to the queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta. As the story unfolds, four young lovers, six amateur actors (the Rude Mechanicals), and a community of fairies and elves contribute to a mix of misunderstandings in a woods outside Athens.
The CRHS theatre department showcases a unique take on this well-known show. Casting includes flexing genders for traditionally male roles, which provides an opportunity for student actors to explore deeper character development. It also, allows this play, written in the 1590s, to better connect with it’s 21st century audience while remaining true to Shakespeare’s intent. Additionally, the set for this production was designed to function as a playground. With trees, platforms of different heights, and a functional bridge, audience members find themselves enveloped within the woods and the intertwining stories.
