Athena Award winners announced from all five traditional high schools
Five female student-athletes — one from each of Anoka-Hennepin’s five traditional high schools — have been recognized for their hard work both in the classroom and on the court, field or rink.
The 45th annual Athena Awards have been announced, which recognize the achievements of young female athletes from public and private high schools in the greater Minneapolis area. Andover High School’s Joli Daninger, Anoka High School’s Alyssa Wicks, Blaine High School’s Emily Brown, Champlin Park High School’s Sydney Hilley and Coon Rapids High School’s Bryna DelCastillo were this year’s winners from Anoka-Hennepin’s high schools.
Daninger is a four-time letter winner in soccer, basketball and track and field, and has multiple state appearances on her resume. She’s also been named Academic All-State, and AP scholar, and has been a part of the National Honor Society. Daninger will attend DePaul University on a basketball scholarship.
Wicks is a four-time letter winner in tennis, three times in softball and once in basketball. She’s also been a member of Anoka High School’s student council, National Honor Society and been named Academic All-State. She’s undecided on college plans, but wants to study pre-pharmacy.
Brown is a 2017 Herb Brooks Award winner and a four-time varsity letter winner in soccer, hockey and track and field. She’s also been named Academic All-State and is a member of the National Honor Society. Brown will be attending the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities on a hockey scholarship.
DelCastillo is a five-time varsity letter winner in cross country and track and field and four-time letter winner in hockey. She’s also a member of Senior Leaders. DelCastillo plans to attend either Hamline University or St. Mary’s University, and play hockey.
Hilley is best known for her time on the Rebels’ volleyball team, where the past two years she’s earned the title of Minnesota’s Gatorade Player of the Year, to go with all-state honors and loads of national accolades. She’s also been named Academic All-State and has been a part of the National Honor Society the past two years. Hilley graduated early this year to begin her career at University of Wisconsin-Madison on a volleyball scholarship.
