Reading Strategies is a class designed for students needing additional support with reading. Students qualify for placement in a full-year class or an every other day class based on multiple standardized test scores, class grades and/or teacher recommendation. Curriculum focuses on fluency, decoding, comprehension and vocabulary development.
- Fluency - increase the ability of the student to read at the correct speed with minimal errors. Some students read too slowly, some too quickly, some with many errors, and any combination of these. We provide individualized instruction to identify and correct the problem.
- Decoding - increase the ability of the student to use phonics, syllabication and text clues to identify unfamiliar words.
- Comprehension - increase the ability of the student to understand the central idea of the text, provide text evidence to support that central idea, and demonstrate how various text features (title, headings, captions, etc.) assist in that understanding.
- Vocabulary Development - increase students' knowledge of prefixes and roots, and content area words, to assist in fluency, decoding and comprehension in ALL content areas.
