Families that apply for in-district transfer or open enrollment will be mailed a letter by Feb. 15 or within 30 days of applying. To attend a different school than the one whose boundary your student lives in, the parent/guardian of an Anoka-Hennepin student can apply for one of two options: an in-district transfer to a school within the Anoka-Hennepin School District or open enrollment to another school district.
In-district transfer explainedThe in-district transfer option is for a student who resides in the Anoka-Hennepin School District and wants to transfer to a different Anoka-Hennepin school from his or her regularly assigned school. For example, if a Blaine High School student wants to attend Coon Rapids High School, the parent or guardian must request an in-district transfer.
Families that apply during the application period (Dec. 1 through Jan. 15) will be considered first. If space is available (elementary sites only), families who applied after the deadline may be considered in late spring or early August if space opens up.
Open enrollment explainedThe open enrollment option allows a student to attend a school district outside his or her home school district. Open enrollment is a commitment to another school district, not necessarily the choice of school in that district. For example, a student at Osseo Junior High School, which is in the Osseo School District, could request open enrollment to attend Jackson Middle School in the Anoka-Hennepin School District. If Jackson is full, the district could offer another Anoka-Hennepin middle school.
Most Anoka-Hennepin schools are available to students from outside the district through Minnesota's open enrollment program. The application period is Dec. 1 through Jan. 15 each year, but Anoka-Hennepin accepts open enrollment applications at any time. Applications are processed based on space available and as they are received. We will continue to accept applications after the deadline and review them in August. Students applying for the current school year may be enrolled immediately if space is available.
Students are approved for enrollment based on the capacity of the school they select. If space is not available in the chosen school, they will be offered another choice within the district.
Open enrollment and in-district transfer applications are available to download from district and school websites for the 2018-19 school year beginning Dec. 1 (running through Jan. 15). Note: A timely application does not guarantee acceptance for the school of choice. Acceptance is based primarily on availability of space.
