618.0 Early Childhood Screening

EARLY CHILDHOOD SCREENING

Early childhood developmental screening is completed in Anoka Hennepin ISD No. 11 per Minnesota Statute 121A.17. Developmental screening for children over 3 years of age must be conducted by either an individual who is licensed as, or has training that is similar to a special education teacher, school psychologist, kindergarten teacher, prekindergarten teacher, school nurse, public health nurse, registered nurse, or physician.

The screening includes the following components:

1. Developmental assessments
2. Hearing and vision screening or referral
3. Immunization review and referral
4. Height and weight
5. Identification of risk factors that may influence learning
6. Interview with the parent/guardian
7. Referral for assessment, diagnosis, and treatment when potential needs are identified.

The district will provide the parent/guardian of the child screened with a record indicating the month and year the child received developmental screening and the results of the screening.

Parent/guardian may conscientiously object to screening and the screening is not then required.

Parent/guardian may also opt to have their health provider complete the screening. Parent/guardian would then need to present the completed screening form to the district when enrolling the child in kindergarten.
