• Welcome to my classroom website

    Dear Fifth Grader and Family,

My name is Mr. John Bauer and I will be your fifth grade teacher for the 2018-19 school year at Jefferson Elementary. I am very excited to work with you and learn more about you! Fifth grade is an exciting year in learning!

I would like to share a little about myself. I am married and have two rescue dogs named Brewster and Cinna, which keep me very busy and often are the “main characters” in my stories. You will get to hear many of these stories about Brewster and Cinna!

I grew up on a farm in central South Dakota and went to school in a small town of about 500 people. I graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree from Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD with a double major in elementary and special education. I taught in South Dakota for three years before moving to Bloomington, MN. I have taught grades 2, 3, 4, and 5, but fifth grade is secretly my favorite!  I moved to Arizona last year due to my spouse’s job relocation but luckily we were able to move back to MN! In my free time, I love to read, go on runs (I am training for a half marathon and a “Tough Mudder”), watch movies, and watch/attend Minnesota sports. We also love to try new places to eat (unfortunately, I am an awful cook).

When I look back at my teachers and how they influenced me, I remember connections I made with them and lessons that were engaging and fun! I do the same for my students. We make lifelong connections to one another and learn how growth mindset changes how we learn. My students become problem solvers and critical thinkers. My students know I was part of them feeling safe, connected and to remember I cheered them on when they demonstrated character or were successful academically, socially or emotionally.

My classroom management style is focusing on engaging academics, building positive community, and developing relationships. I emphasize high standards in my room for all learners. Students should expect high standards from themselves, from me and from one another. Every student can learn and I differentiate lessons so every student is successful.
