Mr. Southmayd is a 2017 graduate of Bemidji State University's DLiTE licensure program. He is licensed to teach Kindergarten through 6th grade in the state of Minnesota and currently holds a position as an explorations teacher for students K-5 at Brookside Elementary in Ramsey, MN.
Mr. Southmayd spent three years volunteering for a youth outreach building in Lexington, MN from 2013 to 2016, helping students in low-income communities reach their personal and educational goals. He attended a three year teaching practicum in the Spring Lake Park school district in an open-classroom project based learning environment with 120 fifth grade students before he graduated from his program.
Prior to becoming a member of the Brookside Elementary team, Mr. Southmayd taught 5th grade at Banaadir Academy South in Minneapolis, working with predominantly immigrant students from East Africa. His experience with the MTCS district led to him becoming the Brookside Elementary lead in culturally responsive teaching.
