Hello! My name is Alyssa Torola, and I am an English Language teacher here at Brookside Elementary. I teach students who use one or even several languages at home in addition to using English at school. Since there are over two dozen languages spoken at Brookside, many people ask me how many languages I speak. That total is two. I am fluent in English and Spanish, and my students are teaching me words and phrases in the many languages they speak, though I’m not learning nearly as quickly as they are. Since I know how hard it is to learn another language (I tried Mandarin for a semester-it’s tough!), I like to remind students to practice and retain the languages that they and their families use.
Brookside is a new school, so we’ve all come from somewhere. I’ve previously taught in Minneapolis, Cottage Grove, St. Paul, and Segovia (Spain). As an English teacher I enjoy teaching all ages, though the excitement and energy in the primary school has been a joy.
A little bit about me…
Outside of school I prefer to be outdoors whether that’s walking, hiking, camping, swimming or boating on the lake, skating, snowboarding, wakeboarding, or gardening. I also love to spend weekends with my family, travel with my sisters, and trying and cooking new foods with friends.
I’m so excited to get to know your child more and see them growing in the English language this year. If you have any questions about our English program, finding an interpreter for school events, how you can get more involved in your child’s education, or anything else, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I check email and voicemails daily and try to respond as soon as I can.
