Welcome to 8th Grade Language Arts!
Teacher: Jodi Anderson-Wolhaupter
Teacher Bio: I have been teaching at Anoka Middle School (Fred Moore campus) for 10 years. I am very familiar with this building, though, since my mom taught English here for 22 years. I'm also married to a former AMSA science teacher, so Anoka Middle School is literally a part of my family. During my teaching time here, I've always taught 8th grade Language Arts, as well as 7 years of Advanced ELA, and several years of Creative Writing I and II classes.
For the past decade, I have been active with several teaching organizations, serving as the editor for the Minnesota Council of Teachers of English and participating in various workshops with the Minnesota Writing Project. As a teacher, I believe it is crucial to network and share best practice ideas to infuse the classroom with engaging activities that demonstrate how literature and writing can be empowering tools. Writing is the best way to understand one's beliefs, and reading not only models effective writing but also helps to build empathy as one vicariously experiences the world through the word.
This Year: We will read a variety of fiction and informational texts, exploring themes anchored in choices, challenges, and changes. Students should be setting monthly independent reading goals, based on areas in which they want to grow. Writing practice in notebooks is encouraged, and larger essays and projects will be incorporated throughout each trimester. Students should reference their Classroom Google pages for more specifics on assignments or online discussions. For a general course overview, see the attached syllabus below:
What's the different philosophy or teaching approach between Advanced ELA 8 and ELA 8?
Regardless of your student's class, he or she will be given opportunities to reflect on areas for personal growth. All students are capable of finding personal success as developing thinkers, readers, and writers.
Resources: To the side, you should find links to many class assignments. (Please note: The assignments linked do not represent all activities and practice--formative--tools used in class. Also, the Classroom Google site can also be a reference for students regarding upcoming assignments.) The 8th grade ELA department webpages are linked below where you can find the anchor activities shared across all classes.

Thank you for supporting your student's education. I am excited to work with your child and to help her or him discover ways to grow as a reader, writer, and thinker. I look forward to growing from my experience with this year's students as well.
