Description: Debate is a competitive speaking activity sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League. While on the Debate Team, students learn to argue persuasively and to defend a position on a controversial policy. Options exist for partners or solo debaters, though all members work together as one team. Topics vary every month, from US poverty reduction to international foreign policy. Students travel to tournaments at other high schools across the metro area, meeting students from many different schools, and may participate in national tournaments at the end of the season as well. Debaters can compete in the novice, junior varsity, or varsity divisions, and have the opportunity to earn trophies, all-conference awards, or a school letter for high level participation. Debate is fun, competitive, and will reward students with valuable lifetime speaking and analytical skills.
