Welcome to the EL Department at Jefferson!
My name is Amelia Kundert. The 2018-2019 school year marks my fifth year teaching at Jefferson. I have taught all ages of English learners, from pre-school to adult, in Europe, Aisa, and in the Twin Cities since 2005. I am so happy to be a part of this school community, and consider working Jefferson students, families, and staff to be extremely rewarding. I have two daughters and live in South Minneapolis.
As one of the EL Teachers at Jefferson Elementary, I help to oversee academic English support for our many English learners. There are a multitude of languages spoken in our school, and our staff takes pride in using strong instructional routines and practices to ensure that all learners are meeting thier full potential. At Jefferson we believe that being knowing or learning a language other than English is a cause for celebration. At times, students need extra support to gain the skills and knowledge in English to become successful in the grade-level classroom. ELs at Jefferson gain English proficiency through the Wonders English Language Develpment (Wonders ELD) curriculum. The classroom teacher and our department meet and discuss the method of English instruction that best meets your child's needs. Students may work with either Kari Muyres or myself to increase their English language proficiency skills in writing, reading, listening or speaking. Our depertment strives to find the best model of academic English support for your child. At times, this support may take place in the classroom, pull-out into a different area, or collaboration with a special education teacher to meet the needs of your child with an IEP.
Please fell free to contact me with any questions you have regarding your child's EL status or education. Interpreters are available for phone calls, meetings, and conferences. Please ask.
