District seeks parents/guardians, community to participate on Secondary ELA Curriculum Study Committee
(06/26/20) Anoka-Hennepin is seeking interested parents/guardians and members of the community to join the district’s Secondary English Language Arts (ELA) Study Committee.
Through January 2021, the committee will be studying how Minnesota’s recently revised K-12 ELA academic standards will impact the district’s ELA curriculum. Findings will be reported to the district’s Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Committee (CIAC), and the School Board periodically throughout the 2020-21 school year.
Specifically, the study committee is looking for 10-12 parents/guardians of middle and high school students in the district, and/or members of the community who may not have kids in school. They will be joined by curriculum department directors, principals, and district ELA teachers.
The first meeting is set for Aug. 20, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Educational Service Center (ESC), located at 2727 N Ferry St. in Anoka. Meetings will be held once a month (Sept. 17, Oct. 8, Nov. 12, Dec. 10, and Jan. 14, 2021), at the same time and location. Those who are interested in participating are encouraged to RSVP by calling 763-506-7732 or emailing secondary ELA teaching and learning specialist Steve Slavik at steve.slavik@ahschools.us.
Specifically, the Secondary ELA Study Committee will explore current research and evidence-based practices in literacy, and then use data to analyze the effectiveness of reading and writing practices in ELA classrooms at the secondary level. The ELA Curriculum Study Committee will also delve into the revised ELA standards, identify overarching changes necessary to our middle school and high school ELA courses, and help to develop the criteria for materials selection.
Parents/guardians who wish to be part of the committee are encouraged to attend all future meetings for consistency within the committee.
