Blaine High School’s Caleb VanArragon named Minnesota Golf Association junior player of the year
(04/05/19) With golf season starting as the weather warms, Blaine High School (BHS) senior Caleb VanArragon is enjoying some recognition.
Earlier this year, VanArragon was named the Minnesota Golf Association (MGA) Boys Junior Player of the Year for the first time.
“It was really cool to win,” he said. “A lot of really good players have won this award in previous years, so it was really cool to have my name added to this list.”
It’s a list includes British Open winner Tom Lehman, arguably Minnesota’s most well known golfer, and other PGA pros Tim Herron and Troy Merritt.
VanArragon won the boys state golf tournament in 2017, but finished 25th at state in 2018. That said, he had a number of non-school-sanctioned junior boys golf tournament victories in 2018, including a win at the Minnesota State Junior Boys’ Championship.
As for the upcoming high school golf season, VanArragon said he’s ready.
“I am really excited about my senior year,” he said. “This is obviously my last year playing high school golf, so I'm hoping that I can make the most of it and play well in as many tournaments as I can.”
He said playing for BHS is great because of his coaches and teammates. “Coach (Kevin Overgaard) and Coach (Brett Theisen) are fantastic coaches — they make practice a lot of fun and help everybody reach their full potential,” VanArragon said. “And my teammates are a lot of fun to play and practice with, and always push me to become better.”
After graduating in June, VanArragon has a scholarship to play golf at Valparaiso University in Indiana.
