Anoka-Hennepin students have strong results on state MCA tests
Anoka-Hennepin students continue to outperform state averages in math, reading and science on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) tests.
Anoka-Hennepin’s student demographics mirror that of the state, and district leaders are encouraged that overall student achievement continues to surpass state scores in all three subject areas, and among nearly every demographic group.
“Our board is committed to having 100 percent of our students literate and proficient in math, reading, and science,” Anoka-Hennepin Superintendent David Law said. “We’ve made investments to support that commitment and our results show that is paying off.”
Overall, 66 percent of Anoka-Hennepin’s students are proficient in math, which is 7.3 percent higher than the state average, and 64.7 percent of district students are proficient in reading, which is 4.5 percent higher than the state average. In science, 64.6 percent of students are proficient, which is 10.4 percent more than the state average.
While the district is proud of the improving results, the School Board and district staff aren’t satisfied, Law said.
“We are making progress, but as our data shows, there’s still more work to be done to make sure every student leaves our system capable of being successful,” he said.
The MCAs examine proficiency in the three core subjects (math, reading, and science) across elementary, middle and high school levels. The MDE releases the MCA test results prior to the start of each school year, and the data serves as part of a system of assessment tools for teachers, administrators, and the School Board to discuss factors that lead to increases in performance, and to form strategies to address areas where performance improvement is a priority.
