Evergreen Park STEM School of Innovation students participate in first STEM Day experience
(06/08/2023) Evergreen Park Elementary - STEM School of Innovation began the implementation of its science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program during the 2020-21 school year and for the first time held a STEM day for students and staff to celebrate the end of the 2022-23 school year and their hard work and learning through challenges, activities and teamwork.
Kindergarten through second-grade students participated in activities on June 5 while third through fifth-grade students had their opportunity June 6.
The specialty focus at Evergreen Park is designed to build student capacity with 21st-century skills with a focus on voice, choice and creativity to increase student engagement.
At Evergreen Park, students will learn to become grade-level experts through experiences at each stage of their time in the school:
- Kindergarteners will become explorers through observation and comparison,
- First-graders will become imaginers through ideas,
- Second-grade students will become investigators,
- Third-graders will become problem solvers,
- Fourth-graders engineers,
- and fifth-graders innovators.
Students simulated a space shuttle landing using plastic eggs which were dropped from the roof of the school building to see if their build, using only three of the tools made available, would help keep the passengers safe.
In the gymnasium, students programmed and operated Sphero programmable robots that help teach computer science principles. They also conducted Skittles experiments and built towers in classrooms.
Heading back outside, students were tasked with building a boat using one sheet of tin foil to see how many pennies (or passengers) their boat could carry.
