This award is sponsored by Horace Mann, and has been issued to school leaders since 2009, designed to recognize principals and schools statewide for the development and support of an exemplary and innovative education program in their school. Programs are judged upon:
-
Demonstrated positive impact on education and children.
-
Principal leadership in the development and implementation of the program.
-
Creativity and imagination.
-
Positive school change and ease of replication at other schools.
Steve Drewlo, Assistant Principal at Blaine High School, received the gold star for an "Adopt-a-Hallway" program. Facing reduced custodial staff, Drewlo ingeniously engaged the National Honor Society to maintain the cleanliness of the sprawling school. NHS students volunteered to collect refuse, recycling, and sweep hallways, fostering a sense of responsibility and pride in their environment. The program's success led to expansion and plans for involvement from sports teams, ensuring its sustainability and allowing custodial staff to focus on more intensive tasks. This initiative not only addressed a practical need but also cultivated a culture of stewardship and community spirit within Blaine High School.
Quyen Phan, Assistant Principal at Coon Rapids High School, earned silver star recognition for the implementation of an "Admin Instructional and Student Support model." Coon Rapids High School shifted its administrative model to enhance and define administrative roles by student and instructional support. This change has led to a decrease in student referrals and improved teacher support.
Jason Paske, Principal at Blaine High School, received bronze star recognition for the "Paws-itive Impact" program at the school. This initiative focuses on celebrating and acknowledging the hard work and dedication of the school staff. Each week, a staff member who embodies the school's values is highlighted, fostering a culture of appreciation and peer recognition. While challenges in ensuring consistent selection and maintaining momentum were encountered, the program has demonstrably improved staff morale and contributed to a more positive school climate, ultimately benefiting students. Data, including student surveys indicating higher satisfaction levels compared to other district high schools, supports the program's positive impact on the overall school environment.
