Nine Anoka-Hennepin students win awards in state school bus safety poster contest
In March, 13 Anoka-Hennepin student-artists were named winners in the district’s annual school bus safety poster contest. Now, nine of those students have also gone on to win awards at the state bus safety poster contest.
In the district competition, the winning students, representing kindergarten through 12th grade, received a school bus piggy bank filled with $25, courtesy of First Student Anoka and Champlin, and Kottke’s Bus Company, as well as advancement to the state competition.
In May, it was announced that kindergartener Emmerson (Emme) Karls, from Oxbow Creek Elementary School, second-grader Sam Coleman, from Madison Elementary School, and sixth-grader Maria Carson, and seventh-grader Marissa Woods, both from Coon Rapids Middle School, won first place in the state competition.
In addition, fourth grader Vanessa Peterson, from Jefferson Elementary School, and 12th grader Shanna Betts, from Blaine High School, won second place at the state-level. Also, third-grader Amelia Reinhart, from Dayton Elementary School, fifth-grader Isabelle Murillo, from Madison Elementary School, and 10th-grader Abarna Anandaraj, from Blaine High School, won third.
Eighth-grader Lydia Bieurance, from Epiphany Catholic School, also took a first place award and competed in the competition as an Anoka-Hennepin entry.
In addition to taking first place, Coleman and Woods will advance to the national competition.
For winning, all 30 of the state student-winners, including all nine Anoka-Hennepin students, will attend a Minnesota Twins game sponsored by the Minnesota State Patrol and Minnesota Association for Pupil Transportation. There, the students will take the field for awards and recognition and have their posters shown on the scoreboard during the game.
