2025 spring sports and activities round-up

(06/12/2025) With the spring sports and activities season wrapping up, here’s a look at who’s heading to state, and how they fared when they performed and played. Also included is information about postseason awards earned by student-athletes and coaches.

Baseball

The Class AAAA MSHSL Baseball State Tournament will be held June 11-12 and 14. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played at CHS Field in St. Paul, and the state championship game will be played at Target Field. 

Anoka-Hennepin is being represented by two teams in the 2025 state baseball tournament. Andover High School earned the No. 2 seed as the champions of Section 7AAAA and Champlin Park earned the No. 7 seed as the champions of Section 5AAAA.

Champlin Park defeated Andover 15-2 in the quarterfinals to advance to a semifinal match-up against No. 3 seed Minnetonka High School on June 12. 

For the second straight game, the Rebels jumped out to an early lead, leading 2-0 in the second inning. The Skippers responded with a two-run bottom of the second inning to tie the game. CPHS regained the lead in the top of the third, but the Skippers put up four in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-3 lead. 

The Rebels kept clawing back with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh, but it would not be enough as CPHS would fall 8-6. 

CPHS got three hits and an RBI from Nicklaus Carlson, while Kellan Oligmueller drove in two runs in the game. The Rebels will now play in the third place game at 4:30 p.m. on June 12 at CHS Field in St. Paul.

After falling to CPHS in the quarterfinals, the Andover Huskies bounced back with a 10-2 win over Moorhead in the consolation bracket. The Huskies will play Rosemount in the consolation final on June 12 at 2 p.m. at Palm Field in St. Anthony.

Boys Lacrosse

The MSHSL Boys Lacrosse State Tournament is being held June 10, 12 and 14 at Chaska and Eden Prairie high schools.

The Blaine High School lacrosse program won the Section 7 Championship with an 8-6 win over Anoka High School on June 5, to earn the school’s second state tournament appearance in school history. The last state tournament appearance for BHS in boys lacrosse was in 2015. 

The Bengals entered the state tournament with a record of 10-6. BHS earned the No. 8 seed in the tournament and played No. 1 seed Edinga in the quarterfinals on June 10. The Hornets defeated the Bengals 17-6.

Weston Johnson led the Bengals with five points in the game, including two goals. Tyler Rinehart pitched in with two goals while Noah Fish and Ethan Burnette each had one. 

BHS played Minnetonka in the consolation bracket and lost a high-scoring affair 19-12. The Bengals finished the season with a record of 10-8.

Boys Golf

The Class AAA MSHSL Boys Golf State Tournament was held June 10-11 at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids.

Champlin Park High School junior Sam Kyes qualified for the 2025 state tournament as an individual. Kyes placed 83rd overall, shooting a 167 (84-83). 

Track and Field

The Class AAA Track and Field state championships will be held June 10-12 at St. Michael-Albertville High School.

Anoka-Hennepin and all five of its traditional high schools (Andover, Anoka, Baine, Champlin Park and Coon Rapids) will be represented by a total 42 student-athletes and 14 relay teams at this year’s state track and field championships.

Softball

The Class AAAA MSHSL Softball State Tournament was held June 3-6, with the quarterfinals, semifinals, third place, and consolation games at Caswell Park in North Mankato. The state championship games were held at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus.

The Champlin Park High School softball team defeated Bloomington Jefferson 6-0 on Friday, June 6, to win the school’s first state softball championship in program history. 

The Rebels, who earned the No. 2 seed in the state tournament, finished the season with a record of 24-2. 

CPHS opened the tournament with a 5-0 quarterfinal win over Eagan High School, earning a trip to the semifinals against White Bear Lake. The Rebels won 3-2 in a walk-off to advance to the state championship game. 

In the final, CPHS used a four-run bottom of the fourth inning to build a 5-0 lead before adding an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, which would hold as the final score of 6-0.

Senior outfielder Ava Parent had a big day at the plate for the Rebels, going 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Senior Hannah Husom drove in two runs on two hits and sophomore catcher Chloe Postma added two hits while senior infielder Lauren Heltemes picked up three hits.

Junior pitcher Marissa Rothenberger tossed seven shutout innings, striking out six batters while allowing three hits.

Boys Tennis

The MSHSL Boys Tennis State Tournament was held June 3-6 at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus. The team championships were held June 2-4, with singles and doubles taking place June 5-6. 

Blaine High School sophomore Grayson Dunigam placed second in the Section 7AA Boys Tennis individual tournament to earn a spot in the state tournament. Dunigam entered the state tournament with a record of 21-6. 

Dunigan played against No. 2 seed and eventual runner-up Aaron Beduhn of Wayzata High School in the first round and lost 6-0, 6-2.

Adapted Softball

The MSHSL Adapted Softball State Tournament was held May 16-17 at Chanhassen High School.

The Anoka-Hennepin Mustangs (2-5) qualified for the state tournament in the PI Division, earning the No. 6 seed. The Mustangs lost to the No. 3 seed Osseo Orioles 15-5 in the quarterfinals and moved into the consolation bracket. 

Anoka-Hennepin defeated Robbinsdale/Hopkins/MoundWest 15-7 to earn a spot in the consolation final against the South Suburban Flyers. The Mustangs lost a close game in the consolation final, falling 13-10 to conclude the season with a record of 3-7.

Kaleigh KnutsonAdapted Bowling

The 2025 Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Adapted Bowling State Tournament was held Friday, May 9 at Bowlero in Brooklyn Park. The MSHSL State Bowling Tournament features three divisions, including the Cognitive Impairment (CI), Physical Impairment (PI) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (AD).

Anoka-Hennepin was represented in total by eight individuals and five doubles teams in CI, six individuals and two doubles teams in PI and seven individuals and five teams in the ASD division. 

In the ASD Division, Anoka-Hennepin senior Kaleigh Kunutson earned the gold medal in girls singles with 434 total pins to win the individual state championship.

In the boys' singles CI division, the Mustangs produced two top-10 medalists in Parker Karna (5th) and Mason Carter (9th). Anoka-Hennepin senior Chloe Bosley earned the silver medal with 453 total pins in girls’ singles. 

Anoka-Hennepin had four individuals place in the top 10 in the PI Division. Junior Evin Murray placed eighth and seventh grader Preston Herzenach tied for 10th, both earning medalist honors. In girls’ singles, freshman Abigail Kielty placed eighth and junior Elizabeth Prenosil placed 10th also earning medalist honors.

Robotics

The MSHSL Robotics State Tournament was held May 10 at the Gangelhoff Center on the Concordia University, St. Paul campus. 

Champlin Park High School qualified fo this year’s Robotics state competition. This year’s competition is REEFSCAPESM presented by Haas. In the event, competing alliances are invited to score coral, harvest algae and attach to the barge before time runs out. Alliances earn additional rewards for meeting specific scoring thresholds and for cooperating with their opponents.

Visual Arts

The 2025 MSHSL Visual Arts Festival was held May 10 at the Perpich Center for Arts Education. The exhibition highlights Judge's Choice Spotlight on the Arts winners from the statewide MSHSL Visual Art section festivals. The Judge's Choice winners are given the opportunity to display their work, discuss their artistic process, and celebrate their achievement in the Perpich Center for Arts Education Exhibition.

Anoka-Hennepin had two students with artwork displayed at this year’s Visual Arts Festival. Anoka High School’s Haley Leibel presented her drawing titled “Where Color Breaks the Surface.” Livia Carlson of Champlin Park High School displayed a drawing titled “The Smolder.” 

Speech

The 2025 Minnesota State High School League Speech State Tournament was held Saturday, April 26, at Shakopee High School.

Anoka-Hennepin was represented at the state tournament by Anoka and Blaine high schools. Anoka placed 21st out of 37 in the team standings. 

Isaac Stokes of Anoka High School placed third in the finals of the Serious Interpretation of Drama competition with the selection Angry Alan by Penelope Skinner.
