(12/15/2023) For Anoka-Hennepin Superintendent Cory McIntyre, student voice is an important and powerful component for the decision-making process and for providing a safe, welcoming and positive school environment. On Dec. 15, Superintendent McIntyre visited with a group of students at Anoka High School (AHS) for the first of many student roundtable discussions scheduled throughout the district.
The hour-long sessions aim to gather student perspectives on the high school experience. Both students and Superintendent McIntyre came prepared with questions to guide the discussion.
The topics included:
- Impactful curriculum being offered and what should be required.
- Expressing barriers to learning.
- Student questions regarding teacher contract negotiations.
- What matters most when trying to create a safe and welcoming school.
- What the teacher-student relationship should be.
- Common discipline issues.
- What the students were most proud of about their school.
- One thing the school could improve on.
Sixteen students participated at AHS and all had multiple opportunities to voice their opinions about various topics covered. Superintendent McIntyre also stayed after the session to speak one-on-one with students and offered them to email him with any additional questions. View photos from the visit.
Joining Superintendent McIntyre from the district was Dr. Joshua Delich, associate superintendent for high schools, Becky Brodeur, associate superintendent for middle schools and student services, and Nate Manaen, director of student services.
In the coming months, similar events are planned at Andover, Blaine, Champlin Park, Coon Rapids, Sandburg Regional and Anoka-Hennepin Technical high schools and the Secondary Technical Education Program (STEP).
