Jamie Hersch, Champlin Park High School, Class of 2005, Fox Sports North anchor/reporter
Minnesota baseball fans, think how exciting it would be to sit in the Twins dugout night after night! That's just what Jamie Hersch, Fox Sports North anchor/reporter, has been doing this summer sports season.
Hersch began her career just a few short years ago as a student at Champlin Park High School (CPHS) reporting on the happenings at the school's football games. She assembled stories from the coach, player and parent interviews, captured and aired them on CPHS's student news broadcast, the Rebel Report. Hoping to achieve the success of sports reporter Michele Tafoya (who has been a host and reporter for KFAN and is currently a sideline reporter for Sunday Night Football), Hersch submitted her CPHS work to the Minnesota State High School League. The organization asked her to be a student sideline reporter for some of the lower bracket tournament games as a trial run. They were so impressed with Hersch's work that they asked her to report on tournaments for state hockey, basketball and football, many of which aired on KMSP and KSTP in 2004 and 2005.
Hersch believes it was her sideline reporting and involvement in sport and academic activities (volleyball, softball, basketball, student council, theater, and yearbook) that helped her get into the broadcast journalism program at the University of Southern California. "I feel like I've never been busier than I was in high school," she said "I worked really hard." In fact, in high school Hersch most enjoyed the time she spent studying with friends after sport and academic activities concluded.
Hersch has been part of the Fox Sports North team since February. She reported on the Wild and Gopher hockey games her first days on the job. "It's a dream to report on the teams I grew up cheering for," she said.
Hersch credits the CPHS staff for where she is today. "No matter what idea I presented to teachers or administrators, they were always very supportive," she said. One Anoka-Hennepin team member in particular helped her out immeasurably. Candy Hersch, her mother, is a speech/language pathologist with the district's early intervention program. "Our family loves watching Jamie report on Minnesota sports," said Candy Hersch. "Thank you to all the dedicated Anoka-Hennepin teachers Jamie had at Oxbow Creek, Jackson Middle School, and Champlin Park High School who encouraged her to pursue her dreams."
The one thing Hersch recommends to Anoka-Hennepin students, "Find what you love and devote yourself to it!"
