Anoka-Hennepin School Board Treasurer Erin Heers-McArdle visits AMSA as guest presenter
(05/24/2023) Anoka-Hennepin School Board Treasurer Erin Heers-McArdle visited Advanced Science 8 classrooms at Anoka Middle School for the Arts Fred Moore Campus on May 12 to share her passion and knowledge of both the sciences and the arts.
Heers-McArdle is a fine art jeweler and metalsmith and spent her time talking with the students about what a jeweler needs to know when working with metal. She discussed the types of metals she uses, demonstrated the science behind what happens to metals when exposed to extreme temperatures and brought examples of her work to explain the metal shaping process.
“I use a lot of science in the art I do,” Heers-McArdle said. “I wanted to show the students how to incorporate the two things together and that there are different ways to make a living as an artist.”
At the conclusion of her lecture, the students asked questions about both her experience with making jewelry and serving on the school board.
“I really like to interact with the community in a way that lets them see I’m just a normal, everyday person and that the school board isn’t my life.”
