Governor Walz visits University Avenue Elementary on the first day of school
(09/10/2021) Students and staff at University Avenue Elementary School - Aerospace, Children’s Engineering and Science (UAE) had a special visitor Tuesday when Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and education commissioner Heather Mueller welcomed students as they arrived at the building for the start of the 2021-22 school year.
“We have been so excited for the 2021-22 school year, which has brought a renewed sense of hope for all of our students at University,” said UAE Principal Diedre Bloemers. “This year, we celebrate our 10th anniversary as a magnet school, and our fourth year as a ‘Leader in Me’ school. Our staff have committed to honoring and developing the greatness in each student so that they are able to find their voice, which aligned with the Governor’s message Tuesday.”
Governor Walz also conducted a press conference at UAE. Anoka-Hennepin School Board Chair, Marci Anderson; and UAE curriculum integrator, Kate Watson, were also able to speak to the excitement of welcoming students in school this year.
“It is invigorating to see students and educators across the state back inside the classroom today after a year and a half of interrupted in-person learning,” Governor Walz said. “There’s nothing quite like the first day of school. As a teacher for more than 20 years and as a dad, I know firsthand that in-person learning is critical to a child’s well-being and academic success.”
Bloemers added, “Governor Walz’s visit on the first day of school was such an honor for our students and staff! He spoke with passion about the work of Minnesota educators and school staff, honoring their commitment and sharing his excitement for having students in school with their peers, learning together. Thank you to the amazing staff, students, families at UAE and Governor Walz. It’s going to be a great year!”
