Staff vs. students basketball showdown brings “March Madness” to CRMS

Coon Rapids Middle School students and staff basketball teams(03/27/2025) The Coon Rapids Middle School version of “March Madness” pits staff against students in a friendly game of basketball with the winner being a positive school climate.

The annual CRMS staff vs. students basketball showdown, held Tuesday, March 25, offered a tournament atmosphere for students looking to earn bragging rights for the entire year. Tied 24-24 at half, CRMS staff utilized tough defense and team play to pull away in the final minutes for a 50-43 win. View photos from the event.

CRMS special education teacher Dan Heiser served as coach for the students team, with special assists from CRHS Head Basketball Coach Mike Ogorek and Cardinals Senior Captain Jaxon Young. Students played an upbeat game, combining drives to the bucket with an outside game that kept them in the mix. CRHS girls basketball team players Arlyn Kannah and Meliah Leonard combined tenacious defense and controlled the tempo on the offensive end of the court. 

When the staff added a special surprise guest coach - “Goldy” the University of Minnesota Mascot - the crowd erupted and the energy level in the gym hit a fever pitch. “Goldy” showed a remarkable ability to both serve as the bench boss while also engaging all in attendance with high energy antics and cheers. “Flash” the Falcon, the CRMS mascot, also added to the gametime fun atmosphere. 

Principal DeMann Seals and teacher Seth Zoellner served as game officials as a legion of CRMS staff served as game organizers, announcers, clock operators, all while serving up popcorn for the 200 plus students and families in attendance. Assistant Principal Mandy Freese led the singing of the Star Spangled Banner. 

CRMS teachers Allison Sims and Nicole Stalboerger served on the organizing committee for what is expected to be an event that will continue to grow. 

“We hope to add more connection with the high school for next year’s game,” said Sims. “This event is fun and preparing for it is part of the excitement. Stoelboeger added, “CRMS has alot of positives going on and this just adds to our school spirit.”
