Andover High School girls’ hockey finishes runner-up at 2023 MSHSL Class AA State Tournament
(02/27/2023) The Andover High School girls’ hockey team made its fourth straight appearance in the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Class AA state championship game in its sixth consecutive state tournament trip to cap off the 2022-23 season.
The Huskies finished as runner-up in the 2023 state tournament, falling 4-1 to Gentry Academy in the championship game.
Andover’s Ella Boerger (Sr., forward), Cailin Mumm (Jr., defenseman) and Maya Engler (So., forward) were named to the All-Tournament team. Following the tournament, Boerger was named the 2023 Ms. Hockey Award winner.
The Huskies opened the state tournament with a 9-0 win over Rosemount High School in the quarterfinals, setting up a battle with Edina High School in the semifinals.
The Huskies and Hornets skated to a scoreless tie in the first period before Edina opened the scoring with a power play goal at the 10:53 mark of the second period to take a 1-0 lead. The Hornets held a one-goal lead near the midway point of the third period before Ella Thoresen tallied a power-play goal to tie the game.
Sophomore forward Maya Engler put the Huskies in front 2-1 with just over four minutes remaining in the game and the Huskies held off the Hornets to advance to the championship game for the fourth straight season.
The Huskies ran into a hot team in the final, falling 4-1 to Gentry Academy. The Stars and Huskies skated to a 1-1 tie after one period, but Gentry scored three unanswered goals, including an empty netter with just over a minute remaining in the game to end the Huskies' hopes of back-to-back state championships.
Andover finished the season with a record of 27-4.
