Bid now: Student-built house is up for auction
(05/13/2022) Students from Anoka-Hennepin’s Secondary Technical Education Program (STEP) have spent the 2021-22 school year building a three-bedroom home that is now up for auction. This annual project at STEP has been conducted for more than 25 years.
“Through the year students get to see all aspects of building a new construction house, and they get to do hands-on work with most phases of the construction,” said Brian LaMotte, the STEP teacher in charge of the house build. “The subjects such as carpentry, electrical, and siding that get covered in this class will not only give them a good idea of what might be involved if they choose to pursue a career in a trade, but also as a good knowledge base as future homeowners.”
The 1,352 square-foot rambler features three bedrooms and one full bathroom with a three-fourths master bath. A walk through of the house was Thursday, Aug. 25 from 5-7 p.m. at 1353 W. Hwy 10, Anoka, MN 55303. The bid deadline is Oct. 18. View more details about the house, a floor plan and and progress photos. View a virtual walk through of the house.
The minimum bid is $45,000 plus 7.125% sales tax, which covers the materials cost of the project, and allows Anoka-Hennepin to offer the same project to students next year. Questions about the house can be sent to PurchQuotes@ahschools.us. A bid form is required when submitting a bid.
The house must be moved by November 1, 2022. Buyer is responsible for all taxes and moving of the house.
“I started my construction career in a Youth Carpentry Apprenticeship my senior year of high school, so now teaching a class where the students get to see all aspects of building a house is a great honor,” LaMotte said.
