CRMS ramps up for Battle of the Books reading challenge with author visit

(11/26/2025) Learning about books included a unique perspective for Coon Rapids Middle School students during a special visit from emerging Twin Cities author Abby Cooper on Nov. 19.

Cooper’s book “Sticks and Stones” is one of the 25 selected titles for inclusion in the District’s annual “Battle of the Books” competition. Battle of the Books students listened to Abby speak during their regularly scheduled morning meeting. Then, during 1st period as an in-school field trip, over 70 interested students signed up to listen to Abby’s high-energy presentation and perspectives regarding life as an author.

Why it matters: Improving interest and proficiency in reading at all grade levels is a strategic priority for Anoka-Hennepin Schools. In “Battle of the Books” teams of three students read, and then test their knowledge and understanding of the selected literature. The highest performing teams at the school level advance to the District event on February 25, 2026. Additional students who aren’t participating in the Battle of the Books were able to engage in meaningful discussions about literacy and writing.

Go deeper:  Using the question “What if”’ as inspiration for her books, Cooper explained her life-long interest in writing which began as a young student and led to a career as a school librarian prior to her life now as an author. She explained the writing process, shared tips for how to approach revisions and refinements, and shared that it may take three years to complete and distribute a new book.

Made for the middle: “Sticks and Stones”, a Minnesota Books Awards Finalist in 2017, shares the story “Elyse”,  a middle school student and some challenges she overcame to find ways to accept and become her best self. Cooper's approach to create “realistic fiction with a twist” resonates with younger readers and is sure to be a popular selection with Battle of the Books participants. CRMS students in attendance either received an autographed book along with bookmarks from Cooper and were also the first group to get a sneak peek of Cooper’s fifth and latest book, “It’s a Mom” which is set for distribution in Spring 2026.

The author visit was coordinated by Coon Rapids Middle School Librarian Alison D’Angelo and Grade 8 ELA teacher and CRMS Battle of the Books Coordinator Simone Simon and made possible by a grant from the Anoka-Hennepin Education Foundation.
