Blaine schools buddy-up to ACE engineering projects
(05/02/2019) Students from the Center for Engineering, Math and Science (CEMS) at Blaine High School (BHS) held a mentorship exchange with students from University Avenue Elementary School - Aerospace, Children's Engineering and Science (UAE) this spring, sharing ideas and inspiration along the way.
During the visit at BHS, UAE students got an up-close look at senior capstone projects and listened to presentations from the students who worked on them. BHS CEMS seniors complete their senior year by pursuing a capstone project, which is a complex team project that provides solutions to real-world problems. Capstones tend to be wide-ranging in focus and impressive, like an automated system to remove road construction cones, to a water pressure hedge trimming system to device that cleans trash and debris from lakes, rivers and ponds, amongst many other ideas.
UAE is a STEM speciality/magnet school with a focus on Aerospace, Children’s Engineering and Sciences (ACES). CEMS students visited the school earlier this spring to mentor students on their projects. In addition to the partnerships with BHS, UAE students also benefit from established relationships with Anoka County Airport, STARBASE Minnesota, Jackson Middle School observatory, and others that inspire exploration and discovery, increasing understanding in a hands-on learning environment.

Blaine CEMS students will showcase their senior capstone projects at a special presentation at 6 p.m., Thursday, May 16, in the BHS school auditorium. The community is invited and encouraged to attend.
Both BHS CEMS and UAE ACES are magnet programs through the Northwest Suburban Integration School District.
