Ramsey Elementary School second graders host school’s 29th annual grandparents day
(05/03/19) For the 29th straight year, second graders at Ramsey Elementary School hosted grandparents day, a day where the students invite their grandmothers and grandfathers to the school for a musical program, classroom tours, and cookies and punch.
“Our grandparents day program is a tradition that centers on honoring the positive impact that grandparents and special guests have in the lives of our students,” said Principal Amy Reed. “It was amazing to see the community involvement at this year’s event.”
This year’s program was held May 2, in the school’s gymnasium, and between songs, Reed read submissions from second graders that completed the sentence: “My grandparent is special to me because ...” Those entries praised grandparents’ cooking abilities (“he makes really good popcorn”), their personalities (“he’s funny, good at fishing, and gives me lots of love”) and their relationships (“she cooks my favorite food all of the time”). In addition, during the event, prizes in the form of plants donated by Green Valley Greenhouse, were awarded to the grandparents in attendance who had the most grandchildren (35 was the winner), and who traveled the farthest (400+ miles) to attend grandparents day.
Lisa Fosse, a Ramsey grandparent who attended the event, said attending an event like this was special.
“My granddaughter was so excited for me to come,” Fosse said. “I think it’s so great that the school would do something like this and that grandparents can participate.”
For Reed, seeing the interaction of Ramsey’s students with their grandparents was a highlight of the day. “Watching the pride on students’ faces as they performed for their grandparents was wonderful,” Reed said.
This year’s event was organized by the school’s music teachers Linnea Colago, Lisa Skelton, and Karen Hartung, and Reed said the program wouldn’t have been possible without them and the many volunteers who helped.
“We have a team of dedicated staff and community members who make this program what it is today,” she said.
