Jackson Middle School sixth-graders raise money for clean water in South Sudan
(01/31/2020) Inspired by a visit from H2O for Life and reading “A Long Walk to Water,” sixth-grade students at Jackson Middle School - A Specialty School for Math and Science (JMS) set out to raise funds to aid in the global water crisis.
After setting a goal to raise $1,500, a penny war between sixth-grade classes helped nearly double that total. Students donated money toward their classroom total, or to take away from another classroom. Pennies and dollar bills counted as positive points and silver points counted as negative and when it was all said and done, the friendly competition raised a total of $2,793.
Funds raised were donated through H2O for Life to Water for South Sudan and will be used to provide fresh water for a school in South Sudan.
Since partnering with H2O for Life in 2015, JMS has raised over $10,000 for school water projects.
H2O for Life recently featured their visit to JMS and the penny war on their blog.
