Students in grades K-2 return to school for in-person learning
(01/22/2021) On Jan. 19, Anoka-Hennepin students in kindergarten through second grade returned to school buildings across the district for full-time in-person learning. The 2020-21 elementary school year began in the hybrid learning model before transitioning to distance learning Nov. 30.
There was excitement in the air as students stepped off of buses and strolled from the parent drop-off line into school buildings, some students for the first time since March 12, 2020.
“I am not sure whose smiles have been bigger this week. The students entering, the teachers greeting them, or the parents dropping them off,” said Denise Schnabel, principal of Evergreen Park Elementary - STEM School of Innovation. “Getting to say ‘see you tomorrow’ and watching them respond with total excitement and an elbow bump has been the highlight of my whole year and if nothing else, we have learned to truly appreciate every day we have with our students.”
This marked phase one of the “rolling start” approach to returning to in-person learning over the weeks and months ahead. Students in grades three through five are set to return to full in-person learning beginning on Feb. 1.
