2018-19 winter sports and activity roundup

Andover girls going to state (03/18/19) With the winter sports and activity season wrapping up, here’s a look at who’s heading to state, and how they fared when they performed and played.


Debate


State was held at the University of Minnesota Jan. 18-19.

  • The only state finishers were in congressional debate, with Andover High School’s Connor Bulluck finishing seventh in the state, and Champlin Park High School’s Oksanna Samey finishing 10th.
  • Qualifiers for state included:
    • Congressional debate: Connor Bullock and Hallie Anderson from Andover High School; Sarah Hassan from Blaine High School; and Oksanna Samey from Champlin Park High School.
    • Lincoln-Douglas debate: Abranette Barry, from Blaine High School.
    • Policy debate: none.
    • Public forum: the team of Hayat Abdullah and Ahmad Wazwaz from Champlin Park High School; and the team of Lucy Anderson and Emily Geiss from Andover High School.

One Act Play


State was held at the The O’Shaughnessy at St. Catherine University Feb. 7-8.

  • Andover High School advanced to state out of Section 5, but didn’t advance to the final four.

Nordic skiing


State was held at Giants Ridge in Biwabik on Feb. 14 for boys and girls.

  • In boys 5K freestyle, Blaine High School’s Nicholas Jacobsen finished 71st; and Champlin Park High School’s Conner Preston finished 65th, Mark Scheller 109th, Jack Nightingale 112th, Zac Olroyd 139th, Joe Eisenberg 140th, Jack Foss 148th, and Sam Rose 152nd.
  • In boys pursuit, Blaine High School’s Nicholas Jacobsen finished 70th; and Champlin Park High School’s Mark Scheller finished 87th, Conner Preston 94th, Jack Nightingale 128th, Zac Oldroyd 135, Joe Eisenberg 144th, Sam Rose 147th, and Jack Foss 151st.
  • Andover High School's girls team placed 11th at state.
  • In girls 5K freestyle, Blaine High School’s Sarah Olson finished seventh, and Stephanie Lewis 36th; Andover High School’s Alexa Havon finished 66th, Claire Beckman 72nd, Lauren Johnson 81st, Beth Defoe 90th, Julia Nielsen 95th, Emy Green 107th, Brenna Russell 121st; and Coon Rapids High School’s Abby Ellenbecker finished 67th.
  • In girls pursuit, Blaine High School’s Sarah Olson finished seventh, and Stephanie Lewis 66th; Andover High School’s Alexa Havon finished 59th, Julia Nielsen 65th, Claire Beckman 80th, Lauren Johnson 97th, Beth Defoe 116th, Brenna Russell 129th, and Emy Green 136th; and Coon Rapids High School’s Abby Ellenbecker finished 51st.

Alpine skiing


State was held at Giants Ridge in Biwabik on Feb. 13 for boys and girls.

  • Anoka-Hennepin didn’t have a boys or girls team compete.
  • Individually, Blaine High School’s Carter Blondel finished 47th in the boys event. Anoka-Hennepin didn’t have a girl compete individually at state.

Dance team

 

The state dance tournament was held at the Target Center in Minneapolis Feb. 15-16.

  • Anoka High School finished seventh in both high kick and jazz at the state tournament.

Girl’s hockey


The state tournament was held Feb. 20-23, at the Xcel Energy Center, Saint Paul.

  • Andover High School finished fourth in Class AA at the state girls hockey tournament.

Gymnastics


The state gymnastics tournament was held at Maturi Pavilion at the University of Minnesota Feb. 22-23.

  • Anoka-Hennepin didn’t have a team qualify to compete for the team state title.
  • Individually, Champlin Park High School’s Chaney Neu made history when she earned the first ever perfect score at the state tournament, earning 10s on the vault. Neu actually swept all five individual first-place medals at state, winning the vault, uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise, and all-around state titles.
  • In addition, in vault, Anoka High School’s Alexis Spiess finished 14th, Champlin Park’s Tashina Beyioku-Alase 15th, and Anoka’s Adreanna Willodson 16th, and Anoka’s Annie Hjelle finished 41st.
  • On uneven bars, Champlin Park’s Emma Saksa finished 25th, and Anoka’s Adreanna Willodson 25th.
  • On the balance beam, Anoka’s Adreanna Willodson finished 17th, and Lauren Provoncha finished 46th.
  • On floor exercise, Anoka’s Adreanna Willodson finished 8th, Alexis Spiess finished 17th, and Kali Kiecker Olson finished 39th.
    In the all-around, Adreanna Willodson finished 14th.

Wrestling

 

The state wrestling tournament was held at the Xcel Energy Center, Saint Paul, Feb. 28-March 2.

  • Anoka-Hennepin didn’t have a team qualify to compete for the team state title.
  • 106-pound weight class: Anoka High School’s Brendan Howes finished sixth in the state.
  • 113-pound weight class: Andover High School’s John Babineau finished sixth, and Anoka’s Brad Howes competed.
  • 120-pound weight class: None.
  • 126-pound weight class: Blaine High School’s Jordan Driscoll competed.
  • 132-pound weight class: Anoka’s Parker Dobrocky, and Coon Rapids High School’s Alex Kowalchyk competed.
  • 138-pound weight class: Blaine’s Trae Janisch and Coon Rapids’ Elijah Madimba competed.
  • 145-pound weight class: Anoka’s Scott Springer finished fifth.
  • 152-pound weight class: Coon Rapids’ Moise Madimba finished second.
  • 160-pound weight class: None.
  • 170-pound weight class: Andover’s Danny Reynolds competed.
  • 182-pound weight class: Anoka’s Bruce Muehlhauser competed.
  • 195-pound weight class: Blaine’s Isaac Atchison competed.
  • 220-pound weight class: None.
  • 285-pound weight class: None.

Boys swimming and diving

 

The state swimming and diving tournament was held at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center, University of Minnesota, Feb. 28-March 2.

  • Blaine High School finished 30th as a team.
    • The 200-meter freestyle relay team of Logan Vagle, Reese Wilson, Wyatt Brenny and Alex Totev finished 11th.
    • The 400-meter freestyle relay team of Reese Wilson, Hunter Erickson, Alex Totev and Logan Vagle took 20th place.
    • The 200-meter medley relay team of Wyatt Brenny, Hunter Erickson, Alex Totev and Logan Vagle finished 21st.
    • Reese Wilson finished 20th in the 100-meter freestyle.
  • Andover High School finished 36th as a team.
    • Asher MacPherson finished 12th in the 100-meter breaststroke.
    • Mason Smisek finished 17th and Noah Rabb finished 18th in the 100-meter backstroke.
    • Ben Linde finished 25th in the one-meter diving competition.
  • Anoka High School finished 38th.
    • Max Dehen finished 13th in 100-meter backstroke.
    • Dehen also finished 22nd in the 200-meter individual medley.
  • Coon Rapids High School finished 42nd.
    • Tyler Schultze finished 16th in the 200-meter freestyle.
    • Schultz also finished 25th in the 100-meter butterfly.
    • Jack Simmer finished 27th in the one-meter diving competition.

Boy’s hockey


The state tournament was held March 6-9 at the Xcel Energy Center, Saint Paul.

  • Blaine High School finished third in the state tournament.

Girl’s basketball


The state girls basketball tournament will be held at Williams Arena, University of Minnesota, March 13-16.

  • Anoka-Hennepin didn’t have a team qualify.

Adapted floor hockey


The state floor hockey tournament for both cognitive impairment (CI) and physical impairment (PI) divisions was held March 15-16, at Bloomington Jefferson High School, Bloomington.

  • In CI, the Anoka-Hennepin Mustangs lost in the quarterfinals at state.
  • In PI, the Mustangs lost in the quarterfinals, but went on to finish second in the consolation bracket.

Boy’s basketball


The state tournament is set for March 20-23 at the Target Center, Minneapolis.

  • Anoka-Hennepin didn’t have a team qualify.
