Parent Involvement program offers new opportunity for families to "Keep Connected"
(3/1/18)The Parent Involvement program is offering a free workshop series for families with children in fifth- and sixth-grade, to support them during a time of transition in their lifes. The interactive workshop series, Keep Connected, was developed for parents/guardians and youth to help them prepare for the changes they will be facing as they enter into the teen years. Keep Connected is designed for engaging and strengthening parent-youth relationships during the transition into middle school and adolescence.
It is also a time for parents and youth to meet other families attending Roosevelt Middle School and Coon Rapids Middle School.

Who: Fifth- and sixth-grade students and their parents/guardian
When: Monday evenings, April 2 - May 6 (6 sessions)
Time: 6-8 p.m.

Coon Rapids Middle School

What does the Keep Connected workshop series look like?
The six sessions include a mix of learning and sharing activities for parents/guardians, for their middle-schoolers and for parents and youth together:
- Parents and youth arrive and meet together for a brief social time.
- Following the social time, parents and youth split up into separate groups to discuss the topic for the day with facilitators.
- At the end of each session, all participants come together for a shared activvity and discussion.
The workshops include time for:
- Parents to explore challenges and strategies with each other
- Youth to explore family relationships with other youth
- Parents and youth to explore their relationships together
- Strategies and tools to connect and build trust with families
- Extended family opportunities through ParentFurther.com
Between sessions, families engage in simple, fun take-home activities that help them try out key ideas from each session. At the end of the workshop series, families participate in a graduation celebration.
