Community Education hosts winter chess tournament

Award winners(2/26/25) The Winter 2025 Anoka-Hennepin Community Education Chess Tournament was held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at Hamilton Elementary School. 

31 students representing their respective elementary and middle schools participated in the tournament. The students were from Andover, Brookside, Eisenhower, McKinley, Morris Bye, Oxbow, Ramsey, Rum River, Sand Creek, Sunrise, Jackson Middle School, Northdale Middle School and Roosevelt Middle School. 

Programmers were excited about the excellent spectator turn out and said families were able to witness some exciting chess matches. 

The participants played a 6-round Swiss System tournament.

5th-8th Grade Division trophy winners

Champion- Daniel Zewdie (5th)- Eisenhower Elementary

2nd place- Brody Melberg (8th)- Jackson Middle School

3rd place- Caden Williams (5th)- Sand Creek Elementary

 

K-4th Grade Division trophy winners

Champion- Floyd Hunter (3rd)- Andover Elementary

2nd place- Sullivan Kafer* (2nd)- Andover Elementary

3rd place- Riley Shenkle (4th)- Andover Elementary

* won the second place tie-breaker match
