Thank you to Hamilton’s PTO funding the WatchDOGS program at Hamilton!
Who are WatchDOGS?
Fathers, grandfathers, step-fathers, uncles, adult brothers, and other father figures who volunteer to serve at least one day a year in a variety of school activities. What is WatchDOGS (Dads of Great Students)?
Watch DOGS is a father involvement program of the National Center for Fathering that was implemented at Hamilton in Fall of 2015.
Watch D.O.G.S. come in to be a part of a full day in their student’s school, spending time not only in their own student’s classroom, but in a variety of other grade levels and subjects as well. You would be a presence in the hallways, at drop-off and pick-up times, as well as have lunch and recess with your student(s).
Do I have to attend an event to Volunteer as a WatchDOG?
Nope. We will tell you all you need to know after you sign up. You will receive your schedule ahead of time that includes the expectations. All volunteers should read the Volunteer Handbook and SafeGuard Privacy information as well. If you have any questions, you can contact Daphne (email@example.com or 763-506-2730).
How do you become a Watch D.O.G.?
Everyone who wants to participate must complete the Volunteer Application and Criminal Record History Release (CRHR) (forms on right). Once the paperwork is complete, contact Daphne (firstname.lastname@example.org or 763-506-2730).
Do I have to volunteer for a full day?
No, you do not. But the day will go by much faster than you think it will! If you prefer to volunteer for a partial day, please contact Daphne (email@example.com or 763-506-2730), and let her know what times you would like to come.
All WatchDOGS will need to wear a WatchDOGS shirt on the day they volunteer. We have a few to borrow, but you can also purchase your own. Go to http://dadsofgreatstudents.com/general and follow the directions to set up your new personal account. Purchase all of the cool Watch DOGS gear you want and you usually receive 10% off your initial order. There are also t-shirts available for kids!
Can Mothers and Mother-figures sign up?
Not at this time. Hamilton decided to implement this structure specifically as way to get more fathers and father-figures involved in the school. As the National Center for Fathering says it, "What men have to offer is not better that what the moms have to offer and have been doing and will continue to do. It's different, it is unique, it's the other half, and in too many cases it is missing, especially in education. If there was a shortage of positive female role models in education, someone hopefully would be addressing that. Thankfully, that is not the case."
There are many other volunteer opportunities available for women (and men!) outside of the WatchDOGS program. Contact Daphne for details.
