West African dance and drum group visits Sand Creek Elementary

students watching drum performance from West African group(02/28/2023) Titambe, a West African dance and drum ensemble, visited Sand Creek Elementary School Feb. 27 to provide students with an engaging and educational program to close Black History Month celebrations at the school.

"Our students were engaged and connected to the music, dance, and culture,” said Sand Creek principal Paul Anderson. “It was so special to see and hear one of our students connect with the performers, having come to this country from Ghana last year. We need to continue to find ways to showcase the variety of cultures that are represented in our student body."

During the assembly the students learned about the different instruments, the national flag of Ghana, some of the language and were able to ask questions. At the end, the students learned the moves to a traditional dance. View photos and a video from the assembly

The performance was the first assembly the school has had since before the pandemic and the school hopes to continue to highlight other cultures with special guests and programs that the students can experience and connect with.
