Dayton student transportation to remain as is for 2023-24, additional review necessary
(07/14/2023) The Anoka-Hennepin School Board approved a recommendation to maintain current student transportation services for the Dayton Elementary attendance area at their July 10 meeting. The decision includes a plan for additional study and review during the 2023-24 school year to inform any potential changes to non-transported areas or updates to the district’s transportation policy.
Specific areas to address as part of the review process include:
- Re-evaluating hazardous designations for roads with 40 mph speed limits,
- Impact of enrollment adjustments as a result of school boundary changes,
- Parent/guardian pick-up and drop off traffic; and continued need for law enforcement support during pick up and drop off times.
Parents/guardians of students who may be directly impacted by the original proposal were contacted for feedback and that input was reviewed as part of this recommendation.
State law requires school districts to provide transportation to students who reside two miles or further from school. Anoka-Hennepin provides transportation service for students who reside one mile or further from school, and in their assigned attendance area. Families who reside within the one-mile area are in a non-transported area, unless determined by the district to face extraordinary traffic hazards whereas the district will determine if providing an adult crossing guard or a bus is necessary.
