2019-20 fall sports and activity roundup
(12/02/19) With the fall sports and activity season wrapping up, here’s a look at who’s heading to state, and how they fared when they performed and played. We’ll also include information about awards student-athletes and coaches may earn during the season.
Girl’s tennis
The state class AA girl’s tennis tournament was held Oct. 22-25 at the Baseline Tennis Center, located at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
- Anoka-Hennepin didn’t have a team qualify to compete at state in singles, doubles, or as a team.
- Coon Rapids High School girls tennis coach, Scott Storrick, was named the Section 5AA Coach of the Year.
Boy’s soccer
The state boy’s class AA soccer tournament was held Oct. 22-31 at St. Cloud State University, and U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
- Anoka-Hennepin didn’t have a team qualify for state.
- Andover High School boys soccer coach, John Schlichtmann, named Section 7AA Coach of the Year.
Girl’s soccer
The state girl’s class AA soccer tournament was held Oct. 22-31 at North High School in North St. Paul, and U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
- Champlin Park High School finished fourth in the state, losing to Rosemount High School in the third-place game Oct. 29. Anoka-Hennepin didn’t have any other teams qualify for state.
- Champlin Park High School girls soccer coach, Keith Pavelka, named Section 5AA Coach of the Year.
- Andover High School girls soccer coach, Tracey Griess, named Section 7AA Coach of the Year.
Boy’s cross country
The state boy’s class AA cross country meet was held Nov. 2 at St. Olaf College in Northfield.
- Anoka-Hennepin didn’t have a team qualify for state.
- Individually, from Champlin Park, Connor Preston finished 24th, and Dontae Johnson 58th.
- From Andover, Cameron Heppner finished 123rd, and Logan Meinert, 147th.
Girl’s cross country
The state girl’s class AA cross country meet was held Nov. 2 at St. Olaf College in Northfield.
- Andover finished 13th in the state.
- Individually, from Andover, Claire Beckman finished 35th, Elizabeth Donner 55th, Alyssa Gerth 114th, Brekkyn Lammert 136th, Madeline Greelis 163rd, Julia Babineau 167th, and Michelle Dyrdahl 168th.
- From Anoka, Kaelyn Nelson finished 79th.
- From Champlin Park, Abby Hibbs finished 146th.
Girl’s volleyball
The state girl’s class AAA volleyball tournament was held Nov. 7-9 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
- Anoka-Hennepin didn’t have a team qualify for state.
Adapted soccer
The state adapted soccer tournament for both cognitive impairment (CI) and physical impairment (PI) will be held Nov. 22-23 at Stillwater High School.
- The Anoka-Hennepin Mustangs lost in the first round of the state tournament, but advanced to the consolation championship game, where the team lost to Robbinsdale/Hopkins/Mounds View.
- Anoka-Hennepin didn’t qualify for the CI-division.
Football
The state class 6A football tournament began Oct. 25, and class 5A tournament began Nov. 7.

In class 6A, Champlin Park finished second in the state, falling to Wayzata in the state title game Nov. 29.

In class 5A, Coon Rapids made it to the semifinals of the Class 5A state tournament, losing to Chaska on Nov. 15.
Girl’s swimming and diving
The state girl’s class AA swimming and diving meet was held Nov. 14-16 at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center at the University of Minnesota.
- Andover High School finished seventh as a team.
- Emily Pawlaski finished second in the state in the 50-meter freestyle, and third in the 100-meter butterfly.
- Brenna Russell finished sixth in the one-meter diving competition.
- The 200-meter medley relay team of Grace Rabb, Charlie Lidberg, Elsie Groebner, and Emily Pawlaski finished seventh.
- The 400-meter freestyle relay team of Grace Rabb, Talia Dalton, Elsie Groebner, and Emily Pawlaski finished seventh.
- Grace Rabb finished ninth in the 100-meter backstroke.
- Anoka High School finished 11th as a team.
- Reese Dehen won two state titles — one in the 200-meter individual medley, and the other in the 100-meter breaststroke.
- The 200-meter freestyle relay team of Reese Dehen, Emma Diehl, Julia Solberg, and Lexci Wuorenma finished ninth.
- The 400-meter freestyle relay team of Julia Solberg, Emma Diehl, Lexci Wuorenma, and Reese Dehen finished 10th.
- Blaine High School finished 12th.
- The 200-meter medley relay team of Allison Schrank, Nicole Wylie, Emma Wilson, and Maddie Schrank finished fifth.
- Allison Schrank finished eighth in the 100-meter backstroke, and 15th in the 200-meter individual medley.
- Emma Wilson finished 10th in the state in the 50-meter freestyle.
- Sarah Knox finished 11th in the 500-meter freestyle, and 13th in the 200-meter freestyle.
- The 200-meter freestyle relay team of Hanna Ryan, Maddie Schrank, Sarah Knox, and Samantha Friedrich finished 15th.
- Alyssa Jensen finished 16th in the one-meter diving competition.
- Coon Rapids High School finished 18th.
- Megan Schultze finished seventh in the 100-meter breaststroke.
- Ella Hacker finished 12th in the 100-meter butterfly.
- Champlin Park High School finished 29th.
- Lola Sanders finished ninth in the 500-meter freestyle.
