Three district magnet schools receive national merit awards

(02/10/2022) Three Anoka-Hennepin magnet schools have earned merit recognition from Magnet Schools of America (MSA) for their academic excellence, commitment to diversity and community engagement.

University Avenue Elementary School - Aerospace, Children's Engineering & Science (ACES) was recognized as a Magnet School of Excellence award winner, which is the top merit award given to only a select group of magnet schools. Last year, the school earned a Magnet School of Distinction honor.

On Feb. 3, University Avenue administrators surprised the school’s staff with the news of the award. The recognition of their hard work and accomplishment was attended by district leaders and a member of the School Board. View photos from the celebration.

“Having Magnet Schools of America recognize University Avenue ACES as a School of Excellence is an honor, particularly this year,” said University Avenue Principal Diedre Bloemers. “Elevating student voice has been at the forefront of our work. We have committed to building strong relationships, while continuing to focus on academic growth and leadership for all of our students. This work only becomes possible through the synergizing of our families, partnerships, community and our entire school staff. As the principal, I am astounded by the greatness that fills our hallways each day!”

Anoka Middle School for the Arts (AMSA), a 2021 Top 20 Magnet School of Excellence selection, earned the Magnet School of Distinction award. Champlin-Brooklyn Park Academy for Math and Environmental Science (CBPA) was also a distinction award winner after being named to the excellence list last year.

MSA national merit awards are given to magnet schools that demonstrate a commitment to high academic standards, curriculum innovation, successful desegregation and diversity efforts, and strong parent and community involvement. To be considered for a merit award, member schools must submit an application that is scored by a panel of educators.

MSA is a nonprofit organization that provides support and assistance to magnet schools across the nation and represents approximately 4,300 magnet and theme-based schools nationwide.
