    Course Title: Welding I Oxy-Fuel/GMAW


    Concurrent Enrollment Credits: Oxy Fuel Processes/Applications 2 credits


    Course Description:


    This course covers hands-on technical college style training in the GMAW and OFW processes. The focus of this course will be to develop skills and techniques in welding positions 1, 2, and 3 on material ¼” in thickness or less.  Oxy – fuel training will cover hand cutting, semi-automatic cutting, plasma cutting, OF and Carbon Arc Gouging, brazing and welding.  Students who perform at an exceptionally high level will be offered the opportunity to take a Welder Certification Test to AWS D9.1 the Sheet Metal Welding Code.

    Course Goals:


    1.       Exhibit safety principles and safe work habits.

    2.       Demonstrate welding skills and techniques consistent with the requirements for an entry-level welder.

    3.       Communicate effectively using welding theory and process terminology.

    4.       Accept constructive criticism and demonstrate appropriate behavior change.

    5.       Demonstrate professional conduct.

    6.       Exhibit punctuality and regular class attendance.

    7.       Exhibit the mastery of a self directed work approach, learning to ask supervisory personnel for help when help is needed.

    8.       Exhibit the ability to prepare various welding materials as needed.

    9.       Demonstrate the ability to set up welding equipment in the lab.

    10.    Spend the hours needed to master course content goals.


    Assessment of Student Performance:


    The student’s progress will be evaluated through the use of written quizzes, worksheets, oral quizzes, tests, and lab assignments.  Lab assignments will be visually inspected and/or destructively tested. Acceptance/Rejection criteria for an industry acceptable weld will be taken from a relevant AWS welding code.








    Course Evaluation:


    Weld performance evaluations, worksheets, quizzes, tests, completed welded jobs and participation will be translated to points. These points will be averaged to establish a letter grade. Students have daily access to updated grades as they are posted to AH Connect.  Student grades will be updated approximately every Friday.   Grades will be determined by the following scale:


    A 100%-90%

    B 80%-89%

    C 70%-79%

    D 60%-69%

    Below 60% will result in course failure.


    Student participation in lab activities is expected each day.  Students have the ability to earn up to 5 participation points each lab day.  Lab participation points will be deducted from that total for the following reasons:


    1.  Tardy arrival to class – This course is designed to prepare you for a career in our industry.  Arriving to work late will result in a penalty, as will arriving late to class.


    2.  Missing class – participation may be made up either before or after school with instructor’s permission.


                                    3.  Use of cell phone or ipod or other electronic devices during classroom or lab time.


    4.  Non participation in lab activities – Students are expected to participate and attempt to learn the prescribed lab activities.  This includes arriving to class in welding appropriate PPE.


    5.  Leaving class early or without permission from the instructor.


    6.  Any infraction that is counter to ISD #11 student code of conduct.


                    This is not a complete list, and student participation can and will be evaluated on a case by case basis.



    *There are approximately 1000 total points during the trimester.
