2017-18 Above & Beyond winner: Barb Graen

Barb Graen Making connections with students and staff is something that comes naturally for Barb Graen. As someone who has been with the Anoka-Hennepin School District for 28 years, Barb has made a positive and lasting impact at Oxbow Creek Elementary School. Her role as media paraprofessional, along with her many years of experience as an elementary prep paraeducator, and as a volunteer with the building leadership team, has helped her in building strong relationships, and leading by example to both staff and students.

Barb makes it a priority to learn as many of her students names as possible. “I hope they feel that they are important and valued,” she said. “She also listens to their stories and makes sure to compliment them on their positive behaviors and interactions with their peers.” Barb explains how with students, she works hard on building positive relationships and developing strong social skills.

She is also someone whom others depend upon due to her calm disposition, problem solving skills, patience, and positive outlook. Community member Gail Michaelson, who is one of two individuals that nominated Barb, explains how she “always has a positive, can-do attitude and tries to solve problems whenever she can. She truly is a positive team player and an inspiration to those of us who know and love her.” Barb has lent her time and leadership qualities to training newly hired paraprofessionals, sharing her knowledge of working with children and how to meet their individual needs.

The combination of her kindness and patience has proven to be something that students and staff can surely rely on with Barb. Staff member Marilyn Rota notices her “quiet demeanor that students are drawn to, especially the little ones, they seem to know that she can help them if they are feeling lost or anxious.” Rota believes that those same qualities that draw other adults to Barb.
