At the start of the school year, Anoka-Hennepin Schools set a goal to provide in-person instruction five days a week, an objective set in response to health and safety concerns with the COVID-19 pandemic.

With two weeks remaining in the first trimester, health and safety protocols have been largely maintained in the school setting and in-person learning has been widely offered. The decision by parents to keep children at home if they are sick has also been an important factor. The district has encouraged and provided at-home COVID-19 test kits and information about vaccination clinics in the community in an effort to keep school safe and open. 

Consider now that a nationwide staffing shortage is impacting the ability for schools to provide services. School lunch slow downs and bussing delays are a direct result of staffing shortages. The staff shortage has grown to include all employee groups with a direct impact on the classroom. 

To address this situation, Anoka-Hennepin has increased pay for substitute teachers to $180 per day and also increased pay rates for temporary, substitute or seasonal positions such as para educators, custodians, child nutrition workers and more. The district has ramped up hiring events and job fairs to attract candidates.
