Andover High School boys’ hockey places third in MSHSL Class AA State Tournament

(03/13/2023) The Andover High School boys’ hockey team made its fourth straight Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Class AA state tournament appearance to close out the 2022-23 season.

The Huskies finished in third place at the state tournament, defeating Cretin-Derham Hall High School 5-3 to bring home hardware for the second straight season. Andover won the state title in 2022.

Andover’s Gavyn Thoreson was named to the Class AA All-Tournament team. Thoreson was joined by linemate Cooper Conway as two of 10 finalists for the 2023 Mr. Hockey Award.

The Huskies opened the tournament with a 5-2 win over Lakeville South High School on March 9, setting up a semifinal match-up against top-seeded Minnetonka High School. Trailing 2-0 after two periods, Thoreson made it a 2-1 game with his fourth goal of the tournament, but the Skippers answered right back to regain a two-goal lead. Minnetonka added an empty net goal to secure the 4-1 victory over the Huskies, ending Andover’s shot at a repeat.

In the third place game, Andover overcame a deficit twice before scoring three straight goals in the final minute of the game to earn a 5-3 victory over Cretin-Derham Hall.

Andover finished the season with a record of 23-7-1.
