Former teacher, Ginny Schafer, has passed away
(04/09/2021) Ginny Schafer, a former health and physical education teacher, passed away on March 26. She was 50 years old.
Ginny began her teaching career at Fred Moore Middle School in the fall of 1993, working there for her entire career. She also served as a department leader in both the health and phy ed areas. Former colleagues say Ginny worked tirelessly to make sure her classroom or gym was engaging and welcoming to all students. Ginny was known as the “iPod DJ,” playing the latest motivational music during her classes and was instrumental in leading Friday night teen nights.
"I always appreciated the personal connections she made with students,” said Jerri McGonigaI, principal of Anoka Middle School for the Arts (formerly Fred Moore Middle School). “If they liked hockey, she would find a Gretzky book to read, for example, and she did this across all interest areas."
A graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College; Ginny was also a two-time collegiate All-American in soccer and member of the Gustavus Hall of Fame.
Ginny is preceded in death by her mother, Renee Schafer. She is survived by her father, Keith (Comfort) Schafer; her brothers, Scott (Kathy) Schafer and Steven Schafer. A celebration of life is to be announced with a private burial at Crystal Lake Cemetery, Minneapolis. Memorials preferred to Hubert H. Humphrey Cancer Center, Saint Therese Foundation, Wayzata Historical Society, or donor's choice.
