Accident insurance coverage available for student injuries
The district does not provide insurance for accidents that may occur during the regular school day or while participating in extracurricular activities. As a service to our students and their families, the district offers the opportunity to purchase low-cost student accident insurance. The district offers this program because of trends in rising family health and dental insurance costs, increased deductibles, co-payments or lack of health or dental insurance coverage.
This plan will provide benefits for medical expenses incurred because of an accident not a sickness. If you have other insurance, benefits can be applied to your deductible or co-payments. If you have no other insurance, this will become your primary accident insurance.
A standard plan school-time insurance policy option covers school-sponsored and supervised activities and time spent in school for a one-time charge of $50 for pre-K through grade eight or $75 for grades nine through 12. The deluxe option costs $100 per year for pre-K through grade eight students and $150 for students in grades nine through 12. Another deluxe plan option is 24-hour coverage for which costs $365 for a year for any student. The 24-hour option covers students through an entire calendar year, whether they are at school or not.
The policy excludes several activities including skiing and tackle football. Special coverage for football players is offered, which covers a student from the start of summer practice through the Dec. 31, 2018. The cost is $250 per year under the standard plan and $500 per year under the deluxe plan.
For student athletes who quality for the free or reduced-price lunch programs and have no other insurance, the standard plan will be provided at no cost to the student. The coverage is not automatic – families must enroll online to qualify for the insurance.
