COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed for students who are interested in young children as well as those who may want to choose a career working with children and/or become a parent someday. In this course you will focus on the physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of a child. You will be able to work with and observe young children in a preschool setting. You will also have the opportunity to bring home a “RealCare Baby” doll to practice parenting and care giving skills necessary for a newborn.
Student Learning Targets:
· Students will use observation and face-to-face experience with children to interpret a child’s physical, social, intellectual and emotional development.
· Students will learn about and demonstrate positive interaction and guidance techniques with children.
· Students will complete a written report (Research/Field Study) of a group of children that includes the following:
· Research plan
· Observation records
· Narrative describing the children, setting and your study questions
· Interpretations/Generalizations about the children’s behavior comparing your ideas to that of child development experts and theorists
· Summary/Conclusion of your study
· Students will work as a team member in preschool, to plan healthy snacks, and research theorists/experts in child development.
· Students will complete units of study, quizzes and exams from the class textbook “Working With Young Children” by Judy Herr.
- Students will create a slide show on a child related topic of their choosing and present to the class.
· Students will have the option of taking home the “RealCare Baby” doll overnight for credit in this class.

Students provides:
3 Ring Binder (1/2 – 1 inch) with 4 Dividers
Loose Leaf Paper
Writing Utensil
Highlighters or Colored Pencils (for coding data)
Teacher provides:
Textbook “Working With Young Children” by Judy Herr
Textbook “Children: The Early Years” by Celia Anita Decker
Construction Paper, Scissors, Glue and Markers
Various worksheets and videos corresponding with units of study
MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS:
Field Study of a group of children (see objectives for details).

CLASSROOM INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS:
Individual reading and writing activities, large and small group discussions, observation of and direct work with children, as well as cooperative learning groups will be utilized in this class.
GRADING:
Performance based assessments, tests & quizzes 70%
Daily assignments 20%
Final Exam – Common Summative Assessment - 10%

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:
Students will:
· Be on-time and prepared for class. Repeated tardiness will result in written referral to assistant principal. No passes first 5 or last 5 minutes of class.
· Actively participate in class assignments and activities.
· Be respectful of teachers, fellow students and children in preschool. Failure to act in a responsible, respectful manner will result in referral to assistant principal and/or removal from class.
